Construct and Build
No cubicle, no desk to be chained to, no unnecessary staff meetings, no boss breathing down your neck, no rules ... (well, sorta)
Operations Manager | Project Manager | Crew Leader | Crew Member
As a member of the build team, everyday is a little different. You have the freedom to work outside, to take pride in your work and to be able to stand back and say ‘Yeah, I built that’.

At DeVries Design and Landscape we design and build custom backyards our clients love. We believe in the power of creating and constructing beautiful outdoor spaces to transform and enrich people’s lives. In order to do that, we need capable, hard working people with the skills and experience to make these beautiful backyards come to life!
This is not an office job (thank the Lord, right?!) This is not a sales job. This is not a get by with the bare minimum and coast job. This is a hard job, but this is also a rewarding job, and this is a fun job.
So what exactly is this job?
It’s a construction job and it’s a leadership job; it’s an actually-make-a-difference kind of job.
See, if you have read our website so far (if you haven’t please do) you know that the first thing we do for our clients is offer them confidence and clarity through a design or plan for what their yard will become. This plan will solve a lot of their problems, but it’s still just a plan on a piece of paper.
To make any of our designs a reality, it takes a capable crew who know their trade and build the best. That’s what this job is.
Anyone from a general laborer to the operations manager is a builder. Sure there is crossover from the design side as in-the-field adjustments need to be made, but as a general rule, the build team coordinates with the design team to bring a beautiful design to life. A successful project requires clear in-house communication and clear communication with the customer. This is critical. Note: While this job is not an office job, some emails and phone calls are always going to be necessary to get a job done right. Luckily, this should never account for more than a few hours a day.
In addition to great communicators, we really need hard working people on the team. The freedom to be outside and away from a desk is awesome, but working outside in the summer with no A/C is not for the faint of heart. You will sweat on this job and you will get a little wet if caught in a rainstorm. We invest in machines, tools and equipment to make our lives easier and speed up the build, but there is still no replacement for human ingenuity and hard work. Some things still are best done with manual labor.
… Ok this is great! You know you are a hard worker and can’t stand the idea of a desk job. You can communicate well and maybe realize you need to grow there. That’s fine.
If the idea of a job with “no rules” is what you are most excited about, here’s the good news: this is pretty much it. We don’t have a company handbook with policies and a bunch of red tape. Here are our only “rules”.
Care for people by doing the right thing. We all know the right thing to do. We want to equip you with a framework that serves our clients and our team well. When you don’t know the answer to a particular question or issue, (big or small) asking yourself, “What is the right thing to do to serve our clients first and team second?” Will almost always give you the correct answer.
Do what you will say you do. Just be honest. We can’t do everything; we have to be honest with ourselves and know our limitations. Our customers don’t expect perfection unless we tell them it will be perfect. They expect honesty and appreciate it more than anything else.
Do everything with excellence. Don’t cut corners, don’t cheat the system, don’t ‘cover anything up’. We take pride in our work and we do everything with excellence.
Work hard. Show up every day ready and willing to work. Mistakes will happen, but outworking the mistakes and learning from them is what really makes the difference.
Most construction job descriptions list the skills needed. We need those skills too. If you have experience in any of the following categories, we would love to have you on our team.
General construction knowledge
Landscape construction knowledge (e.g. paver patios, retaining walls, firepits, kitchens, water features)
Plant installation knowledge
Grading/seeding/sodding knowledge
Landscape lighting knowledge
Mechanical knowledge (e.g. truck and equipment maintenance)
These are just a few of the skills we’re interested in; and while they are important, they aren’t the most important things. We are looking for hard working people with great character and integrity first, construction knowledge second.
Still have questions? No problem. Feel free to give us a call or send us a message.
